I enjoy my new printer. One minor issue is that I cannot get a good print out on the maximum 1200 x 600 dpi. However, for most of my needs 600 dpi works just fine. To resolve this problem I download some deb packages from brother here and here. Then as root I make the directory /usr/share/cups/model/ and install brhl2140l followed by cupswrapperHL2140. In my printer manager I now see a new printer listed as HL2140 and send a test page to it. In the set printer options I change the dpi to HQ1200 and send a test page to the printer. Now I have high DPI printing from my Brother HL-2140 on Debian. If you want a low end monochrome laser printer for Linux/Debian I highly recommend this model. I got mine for under $100 from NewEgg.
I just got a new Brother HL2140 Monochrome Laser printer so I no longer have to pay the computer lab on campus 10 cents a copy (which adds up when you are up for Workshop in a Creative Writing course and have to make 20 copies of a 20 page short story).

in my browser I type http://localhost:631 which brings me to the cups configuration interface. in the name feild i type lazerprinter, for location i enter home, and description is Brother HL-2140. I click continue and I am greeted with a drop down selection for devices and find my printer listed as Brother HL-2140 series. I select and click continue. I am asked to select a model. There are a two recommended models highlighted and based on a tip from Brother’s website I select Foomatic/hl1250. I am greeted with a pop up dialog requests user name and password. I enter root and my root password. I am told that laserprinter was installed and am forwarded to adjust the seting of my new printer. I change my DPI to 600. From the home page I select manage printers and choose to print a test page. The printer cranks up goes to through the motions and I have a test page. I also select allowed users, and input my regular user name. Now for a field test. I print an article from my blog in firefox, and print a peom I opened in AbiWord. Both come out beautifully!
